Changing land use impact on biodiversity
Demand for biodiversity indicators is high. CLIMB is a practical tool for assessing nature in Sweden and the Nordics in a transparent and comparable way.
CLIMB 1.2 is available for download in Swedish
CLIMB is a tool for Nordic conditions that calculates biodiversity within a geographical area. CLIMB has been developed for such quantification to primarily be applied in case of land use change, i.e. in industries such as energy, material extraction, infrastructure and urban planning. CLIMB is developed to support informed land use decisions in line with EU and global biodiversity targets and new frameworks in finance and accounting.

Noteworthy about CLIMB
CLIMB is already in use in environmental permit trials!
Talga works actively to increase biodiversity in the areas where they operate. They are committed to achieving net positive biodiversity and have chosen to use CLIMB to demonstrate and calculate this. In an ongoing* environmental permit trial for Talga’s planned mine at Nunasvaara Södra in Kiruna municipality, CLIMB has been used as a calculation model for the company’s commitments regarding ecological compensation.
In April, the company received permission from the Land and Environment Court (M 1573-20), and there you can read the following under condition for permit no. 19:
âThe company must carry out measures to compensate for the loss of natural values that arise through the operation. The compensation measures must correspond to at least 115% of the impact value, calculated according to the calculation model CLImB or a similar calculation model. The compensation area must be located within the municipality of Kiruna or, alternatively, within the county of Norrbotten…â
Here it becomes clear how CLIMB can function as an excellent tool for measuring and valuing otherwise difficult-to-define issues in the environmental permit process.
* The operation received permission in the Land and Environment Court in April 2023. The judgment was appealed to the Land and Environment Court of Appeal, which announced in August that it did not grant leave to appeal, but announced that the Land and Environment Court’s decision would stand. This, in turn, has been appealed, and the company is now awaiting the Supreme Court’s announcement as to whether leave to appeal is granted or not.
CLIMB wins Sustainability Achievement of the Year
On October 17, 2023, CLIMB won the award for “Sustainability Achievement of the Year”, a prize awarded by the Swedish Network for Sustainable Business.
We are very happy and proud of this recognition of CLIMB as an important tool for sustainable business.
From the juryâs justification:
“At a time when six of the nine planetary boundaries are crossed, it is more important than ever to be concrete and to act. By making the tool free and accessible to everyone, CLIMB contributes to informed decisions and a sustainable future”
