HOW CLIMB STARTED
The UN Scientific Panel IPBES, which is linked to the Convention on Biological Diversity, is adamant that the ongoing loss of biodiversity is one of the biggest and most urgent crises of our time to solve. It is also one of our most difficult crises; nature consists of many different factors that constantly interact with each other. In recent decades, it has become increasingly obvious that the measurability and quantification of biodiversity is a critical success factor in reversing the negative trend of biodiversity loss. CLIMB has been developed to begin this work in Sweden and in the future also in the rest of the Nordic countries.
In 2018, Ecogain identified the importance of measurability in terms of biodiversity as absolutely crucial for the issue to achieve success in business. In March 2020, members of the business network Business@Biodiversity Sweden, a network facilitated by Ecogain, realized that business needs to come together and take the lead in several industries to develop a new, credible method for measuring biodiversity. The companies in the network saw it as their role to take the lead in striking a reasonable balance between scientific validity and ease of applicability.
Eight partners agreed on self-financing and the CLIMB project started in September 2020. The partners who were involved from the beginning were Boliden, LKAB, Cementa, Svenska KraftnĂ€t, Specialfastigheter, SkellefteĂ„ Kraft, SCA and Vattenfall. All of them joined based on their membership in the business network Business@Biodiversity Sweden. The project continued with extended external funding until December when it was decided that CLIMB would be based on Defra’s Biodiversity Metric.
Ways of Working With CLIMB
During 2022â23, a new project, Ways of Working with CLIMB, was underway with the aim of testing different usage possibilities with CLIMB and creating a first version of the model in close collaboration with the intended users. Ways of Working with CLIMB was carried out within the Strategic Innovation Program Swedish Mining Innovation, which is a joint venture of Vinnova, Formas and the Energy Agency. Through Ways of Working with CLIMB, the model has been able to be adapted to be simple and user-friendly, while based on a scientific basis and including uncertainty factors regarding ecologically complex relationships. For more information on the uncertainty factors, see Technical description CLIMB 1.2, now available in Swedish.
During the course of the project, trade-offs have been made continuously between what is sufficiently scientifically substantiated and what is practically applicable and easy to understand. A very important part of the Ways of Working with CLIMB project has been to involve many potential stakeholders, such as authorities, civil society, academia, consultants and businesses outside the partner group.
